Dustin and Paul joined up in 2017 to start Active Design & Build. They started the company because they are both passionate about construction and remodeling in particular. But more than that, they combined Dustin’s experience in the military and Paul’s operational management experience to create a ground-breaking technology-forward construction process that yields exceptional quality at reasonable cost.

After spending five years in the Navy with the elite special operation force, Seabee Engineer Reconnaissance Team (SERT), Dustin studied economics and finance at the University of Colorado at Denver. Dustin worked in the private sector for seven years in oil & gas and then left to pursue his passion for building an impact-driven company that makes the world a more enjoyable, interesting and sustainable place. Dustin got involved with construction as a teenager working with his father, a professional commercial builder and then later honed his skills as a residential remodeler with a Denver-based firm. Dustin is Active Design & Build’s licensed professional for residential construction with the City of Denver and surrounding areas. Dustin runs Active’s Production Team.

Trained as a Chemical Engineer at the University of Notre Dame, Paul worked in oil & gas as an engineer, operations manager, and sales exec across six countries and four continents. After 14 years with a Fortune 500 firm, Paul decided to turn his hobby into a business. He acquired the construction bug in high school spending summers constructing barns and outbuildings. In college he renovated dorm rooms and then later remodeled rental apartments and his own homes. Paul is the director of the Sales & Creative Team.
The interior designers at Active Design & Build utilize Chief Architect architectural home design software to design and plan your project. Chief Architect is a leading 3D design software that enables us to both generate detailed technical drawings and provide 3D views and walkthroughs so that you can get an idea of the look and feel of your space before we begin.
ADB’s standards for blueprints ensure all relevant and key information is specified for each trade working on your project. The plans are printed on durable laminated sheets in large format (4’x3’) and posted clearly in your home for everyone to see. The project coordinator stops by most days to ensure everyone onsite understands the scope listed on the plans. These documents serve as our internal work instructions, but also contractually as your scope of work so that you know exactly what you are getting and what is included.
Construction is more than knowledge of how to build. Construction on your home is a complex project with many moving parts that must be managed. Though our project coordinators and project managers are highly experienced in construction, they are managers first. We use a cutting edge construction project management software platform, called Buildertrend, to keep our team and schedules on track. Best of all, you have access to Buildertrend through your desktop and mobile so that you can stay informed on the progress of your project, even from out of town!
